Armed Robbers

Armed Robbers

You know the enthusiasm and strength you rap with when someone ask ‘what will you do if-God forbid o, armed robbers were to visit your home and you are in the house?’
Anyway I have reminisced that over a hundred times from where I will hide and wait for them to the weapon I will use on them, but wait! now let me tell you what I am most likely to do from experience.
It was 2:45am when I heard mom’s room window squeak like it was being opened, it dawned on me that they must have torn the window net already, few minutes before this I had heard a sound like someone jumped into the compound and now this? I was alone that day as mom was on night duty, I picked my phone as I moved a little closer to mom’s room door to listen then it began.
My hands trembled and I found it difficult to even dial or search for any number, I was transfixed to a point shivering to the extent I urinated on myself and when at last I got though to call mom I didn’t even hear myself when I whispered ‘thieves are here’ and whatever it was mom said at the other end, I didn’t know. 30 minutes I still stood there scared and listening, waiting for the worst till mom’s call come in ‘It must have been the neighbors window’ she said and then I realised that indeed it was.
The next morning I noticed a coconut had fallen in our compound, the sound I must have first heard. Please if ever you ask me that question again capitalize on the ‘GOD FORBID’ because I don’t even want to encounter them ever…

Chicken Head

Chicken Head

The most underrated portion of chicken in my house is the chicken head-at least that is what we call it but it’s a combination of the head and neck. If you are quick enough to request it first it will be a bonus to you aside your main portion of chicken.
Today it so happened that I went for a vacation in my uncle’s place. After the killing of the chicken I didn’t hesitate to request in advance for the chicken head.
My meal is served and all I see is indeed the chicken head, not with even the slightest trace of a neck neither is it a bonus because as I search my food there lies no other portion of chicken but the head.
#No more chicken head request for me ever again.

Salon gossip

Salon gossip

“You better marry Good husband ooo!” Madam said turning to her apprentice, Just as the young woman with a child strapped on her back left the salon, where we are.

” That woman’s husband no dey gree at all, na so them dey argue last night; no one fit sleep for them ” she said while filing her finger nails.

Her apprentice, busy braiding my hair said  “I hear say, he even dey beat am”

“Ouch!” I complained when she drew my braid tighter

“I for say, I no dey see the woman and her husband again enjoying for Mama chinedu’s restaurant” the madam continued.

“Me I no fit take am, I for done pack be that” she said applying blood red nail polish on her nails.

I waited for a second, then stole a glance at her.
To confirm if the bruises she had stamped on one side of her face was for real, she had tried covering them with makeup

I turned back and my eyes collided with that of the apprentice’s on the wall mirror, our eyes held silent questions.

We all knew that the madam’s husband is a known wife beater.

Spare the rod and…

Spare the rod and…

Sometimes we can’t keep from grinning from ear to ear all because we remember something from the past and we don’t mind relieving them again and again. While there are some memories we keep pushing farther away from our mind. Those ones often leave bitter aftertaste and nightmares.

Then there are others that you’re grateful happened, even if you don’t like them at the time.

One of those memories that I can’t shake off and it’s often triggered by something; it’s of my several attempts to write certain alphabets and my mum signing and scolding me. She would then latch her hands on mine, aiding me to write.

Just like before a tsunami or earthquake happens, it would start building up: silent vibrations and little giveaways, until gbam! It explodes. Often times we are often blind to the signs before the explosion.
My inability to write ‘f’ and ‘b’ didn’t bother me much, I was a vibrant kid, always running here and there, all the scoldings usually go out from the other side of my ear, fast. I didn’t know that the gentle nudges and scoldings were just a build up to an explosion coming.

It did happen at school before dismissal. My mum came to take me back home. I was oblivious to the storm coming, I was busy chattering with amaka, my friend then. All I knew was mum was talking to my class teacher and I wasn’t close to eavesdrop.

I knew the moment of reckoning was upon me, so I shuffled my feet hoping she would forget or change her mind.

“Favour! If I catch you eeh! Will you come here”

I ran to answer mum, only for her to hold me by my ear.

“I thought you learnt to write ‘d’ and’f’ gboo!” She said, face red with anger.

My mum is fair almost like an albino. The emphasis on ‘almost’.

I didn’t want to tell her that it was by a stroke of miracle that I wrote ‘f’ correctly instead of 7 I usually wrote and ‘b’ instead of ‘d’. I just stood moping at the ground, one would think I was trying to demystify ancient secrets.

My mum unleashed her anger and flogged me despite pleadings from my teacher in front of my classmates. It stopped the usual chatter and it caught their attention. My classmates with the attention span of 1 second.

I was humiliated

I did learn to write those alphabets well.

With the arguments about whether to punish a child or not. I’m glad my mother did. She did so with love, though at that moment I knew even at that small age I absolutely did not like her that day.

Who likes punishment?

Dream chasers

Dream chasers

… And when it seems, that ride is too fast and no matter how fast you run, you just can’t catch up.
Then start at your own pace
What counts is consistency and results

You stand staring at sumptuous dishes,
With their aroma-like-finger, beckoning you, teasing you, so that you smile and dream
You are tempted to gulp them all down and clean the plates
Choose one dear, or you will end up enjoying none and with a needling pain caused by bloated stomach.

Yea, I know of those ideas, they are great, I agree.
choose one, water and weed them and watch them blossom.

Ehiyaa! Oya sorry! You’ve understood where you were wrong.
Let the self pity stop there, start working on your dreams.

Me Next.

They took off his eyes ‘just a taste’, They said taking turns to lick the fluid and blood that came off with it.
I didn’t believe I was actually watching this, eyes transfixed, heart throbbing so fast I felt my entire body was nothing but a heart.

I  need to get out of here but I am too traumatised. The heat of the fire burns my skin like I am already in it, wondering how they survive staying closer to it I almost forget my predicament. They have become quite busy with Kent and this was my only chance, so I chew on the rope used to bind my arms, It cuts deep and gets my left hand dangling held by just bone and a meager, following the strands as they cut is my teeth.
My legs ain’t tied, they are put into a bucket just perfect to hold them close together, but this wouldn’t be difficult to slip off from quietly- or so I thought.
Being quiet wasn’t that easy with just one hand so as I slipped out bucket the noise called for their attention putting me in a race with a death penalty if I be caught.
Two if the cannibals chase me and although I have no strength I run like I have an extra strength stored up specifically for this.
Wait a minute! I am back to the spot I took off from, I can see the fire, I can see as they dig into Kent like his organs are chocolate coated.
As I stand before Kent I know he is all gone. I guess I am next as their hand get a hold of me.

She cries and her consolers promise a better tomorrow.

The gonif walks the street today, I wouldn’t need to do the same tomorrow he says.

Tied to her back is her hungry child, she refuse to let go for tomorrow he becomes her hero.

He is weak tonight so I await to settle our differences tomorrow.

She sleeps over it, there is still time she says to correct her mistakes tomorrow.

But what if… tomorrow never comes?

The change makers

The change makers

Do you want to change the world? But, You don’t know where to start, right?

You are not alone. Most, are in the same situation.

We are not to remain in one place, just wishing or day dreaming for things that might be.

For us to be the change we want to be either in our family, society or even for ourselves. We need to start somewhere being the change makers.

One of the problems we face is that we are waiting for one big idea or that special time to start, but there is no special time.

Changing the world involves starting to solve the small problems around you. It can be to solve that waste management problem in your street. It also involves developing ourselves personally by taking leadership courses and sharpening and learning new skills knowing fully well that we weren’t created for ourselves alone, that people around us are waiting for us.

It involves us stepping out of our comfort zones and doing the things that scares us.

Remember, there are millions of opportunities around us that aren’t there for youths back then.

So start somewhere to change the world around you, when you do and I do, then the next person do. Changing the world will be possible.

It involves us all

It involves us all

“Omo! this country is something else” the driver said, sharply swerving the bus to avoid pothole.

“Imagine the news on , that someone high up in the government carted away with a huge amount of money.

“Bunch of useless leaders! ” said the bearded young man punching his fist in the air to make his point.

Ducking her head to avoid being hit by the young man, Ada murmured about people who wouldn’t keep their hands in one place while they talked.
Passengers hmmed and ahhed in disapproval about the way the country is heading to.

They stopped at a police check point, the driver fished out a crumpled naira notes and discreetly handed it to the gun-toting policeman, who then allowed them to continue their journey.

Throwing the last bit of popcorn in her mouth, Ada crumpled the popcorn wrapper and threw it outside, through the window.
Turning to the young man beside her she said “give me the nylon make I help you throw away am”

We all are as guilty, in one way or the other as the people we accuse of corruption .

Individually, we should do our bit to make our society much more better.
Complaining wouldn’t make us better.
